SWA Celebrates Recycling in Action With Open House at its Recycling Facility

Celebrate Palm Beach County being the state’s top recycler two years in a row by participating in the national Recycling in Action initiative with The Association of Plastic Recyclers. Tour the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County’s (SWA) Recovered Materials Processing Facility (RMPF) on May 17, 20 and 22 to see first-hand how your blue and yellow bin recyclables are sorted and processed so they can become valuable new materials.

Open house tour dates and times are:

  • Saturday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Saturday, May 17 at 12:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 17 at 2:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, May 20 at 9 a.m.
  • Tuesday, May 20 at 11 a.m.
  • Thursday, May 22 at 1 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 22 at 2:30 p.m.

Participants will tour the SWA’s dual-stream facility to see how it receives, sorts, processes and prepares the blue and yellow recycling bin materials for market. Each tour will take approximately 45 minutes and will include an opportunity for questions.

Registration is at SWA.org/Recycling-in-Action. These free tours are capped at 40 county residents.

NOTE: The RMPF won't be actively sorting recyclables on May 17, but participants will be able to watch videos during the tour that demonstrate the recyclables sorting process.

Attendees are also encouraged to participate in the SWA's Plastic Bag Xchange2 Program by bringing two single-use plastic shopping bags to receive two reusable recycling bags in return. Make sure the bags you turn in are empty and clean.

REMINDER: Hurricane season starts June 1. Now is the time to complete your vegetation trimming. Once a storm threatens, it’s too late to trim trees. It’s best to make a year-round tree trimming plan a part of your hurricane season preparations to minimize property damage and help our community quickly return to normal after a storm passes.
